Should You Be Afraid of Maine’s Largest Spider Species?
There are tens of thousands of spider species across the globe and hundreds that are native to Maine.
Of the species in our state, do you know which one is the largest?
Should you be worried if you encounter one?
Let's answer those questions and take a look at Maine's largest spider: the Fishing Spider.
How big does the Fishing Spider get?
According to A-Z Animals, the leg span of a fishing spider can reach about four inches.

Why are they called fishing spiders?
They are called fishing spiders because they catch their prey in and around bodies of water, feeding on things like insects, tadpoles, and small fish.
They have the ability to walk on water and are excellent swimmers.
They can even dive underwater to catch their prey.
Are fishing spiders harmful to humans?
Fishing spiders are not considered harmful to humans.
They are venomous, and some individuals may experience an allergic reaction, but severe allergic reactions are very rare.
Bites are also rare, as fishing spiders are very shy and more likely to flee when they feel threatened.
If bitten, the bite is considered similar to a bee sting.
If you have a fear of spiders, you're not alone.
Many people think they're downright creepy, and the bigger they get, the creepier they are.
If you're one of those people, hopefully this puts you at ease.
