Maine garnered international attention on Monday, July 13, 2026, when a man was shot by an agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The incident happened early Monday morning when ICE agents were reportedly conducting surveillance on a Biddeford address which, WABI-TV reports was the last known address of an illegal alien.

A spokesperson for ICE confirmed that the man was shot at the intersection of Pool and Hill Streets as he allegedly refused to stop for the agents at the scene.

The agent who fired the fatal shot is on leave pending the outcome of a multi-agency investigation that includes state and Federal agencies.

But what do we know about the man who died? That information is slowly coming to light.

The man who was killed has been identified as Johan (Joan) Sebastian Guerrero, 26, of Columbia, according to WGME-TV.

Angus King Jr.'s office reports the Senator was told by DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin that Guerrero was not the intended target of the removal detail that was conducting surveillance in Biddeford.

A neighbor told CNN that Mr. Guerrero lived with his partner and their 3-year-old daughter.

The Maine Immigrants Rights Coalition says Guerrero was authorized to work in the United States and had been issued a Social Security number.

Little of this information has been confirmed by Federal officials.
