Fatal Shooting in Biddeford, Maine by Ice Agents During Removal Operation

New information about a fatal shooting in Biddeford indicates the ICE officer was conducting a removal operation when the subject fled.

The Maine Attorney General's Office has confirmed that a fatal use of deadly force happened Monday morning in Biddeford, involving federal law enforcement.

The male individual who died is not being named until positive identification is made and his family notified.

According to the Maine AG's office, initial statements indicate that an Enforcement Removal Operations Office was conducting an enforcement operation related to a final order of removal.

The subject allegedly tried to flee in a vehicle in the direction of the officer and was fatally shot.

A Federal Enforcement Removal Operations Officer is commonly known as a deportation officer and works within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The officer involved in this shooting has been placed on leave, pending the outcome of the investigation, as is standard protocol in police-involved shootings.

Maine Governor Says Local and Federal Agents are Investigating a Fatal Shooting by ICE

Maine State Police and other agencies are aiding in the investigation of the shooting.

Project Relief, a racial justice and immigrant rights advocacy group, said in a Facebook post that the deceased is one of their supporters.

Governor Janet Mills said, in a statement, that she is aware of the fatal shooting:

I know that situations like this are alarming and frightening. The Maine State Police are at the scene supporting and working cooperatively with the Attorney General's Office, Maine's Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and Federal Officials to determine the facts of what occurred this morning.

This shooting follows another fatal shooting by ICE agents in Houston, Texas, last week.

CBS News reports a Mexican man, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, was picking up workers in his van when immigration officials thought they recognized one of the occupants as someone they were looking for.

The Department of Homeland Security says Araujo allegedly tried to run over one of the agents, who fired in self-defense.

An attorney for two of the men in the van told a different story, claiming the van was parked when the agent fired through the passenger side window.
