Maine residents are at the second-highest risk of being scammed in the country, according to new research from Duelbits, behind only Florida.
The study cited several factors, including above-average spam call rates, higher annual online spending, a large population of residents 65 and older, and more than one in five Mainers working remotely, which can increase exposure to phishing scams.

Elsewhere in New England, New Hampshire residents are also among the most at risk of being scammed, ranking seventh nationwide, while Massachusetts ranked 11th.
Rhode Island was the least at risk in the region but still ranked 29th, according to the study citing FBI data that found online scams cost Americans $16.6 billion each year.

A DuelBits spokesperson said the billions of dollars lost to online scams each year show how serious the issue has become, especially as scammers continue to use more sophisticated methods.
The spokesperson said the study suggests scam risk can vary by state and encouraged Maine residents to be cautious with their money while sharing that advice with family, friends, and neighbors.

And there you have it! Maine residents ranked second in the nation for scam risk, according to a recent report.
