A man is in custody after a Monday night fire at the offices of Bangor Braces.

Maine Fire Marshal's Office Charges an Unhoused Man For the Bangor Fire

Kerry Smith, 30, an unhoused man from Bangor, is charged with arson.

The fire at the offices of Bangor Braces, 257 Harlow Street, in Bangor was reported at approximately 11:51 p.m. on Monday. Bangor Fire Department crews responded and extinguished the fire.

Bangor Braces is an orthodontic office. Owners took to their social media page to assure patients that everyone is okay, but it will be a while before they can see patients again.

Maine Investigators Say the Bangor Braces Fire Started Outside Near Some Trash Cans

During the process, Bangor Firefighters noticed circumstances regarding the origin and cause of the fire that they say appeared suspicious, and so they asked for assistance from the State Fire Marshal's Office. Fire Investigators determined that the fire had started on the exterior of the building near two plastic trash cans before it spread to the interior offices.

Maine Department of Public Safety Spokesperson Shannon Moss says the Fire Marshal's Office ruled the cause arson, and an investigation led authorities to take Kerry Smith into custody.

No One Was Hurt in the Fire That Caused Thousands of Dollars Worth of Damage

Officials say approximately $20,000 in damage was done to the building. No one was in the offices at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

This investigation is ongoing.
