Maine Governor Proclaims June 25, 2025, as ‘Cooper Flagg Day’

Gov. Janet Mills issued a proclamation Wednesday, declaring June 25, 2025, as "Cooper Flagg Day" in Maine. The proclamation comes the same day as the 2025 NBA Draft, which is expected to begin with the Dallas Mavericks selecting Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick.

In a press release sent out by the Governor's Office on Wednesday, Gov. Mills said Flagg's talent and dedication to the game have "earned him national acclaim as perhaps the most promising player of his generation."

"He is a source of tremendous pride for Maine," Gov. Mills said in the release.

"I have proclaimed today as Cooper Flagg Day, so all the people of Maine can celebrate his achievement, hard work, perseverance, and sportsmanship, which should inspire youth across our state to pursue their dreams with Cooper's signature determination."

Flagg responded to the governor's proclamation by saying he's "proud" to call Maine his home state and "grateful for all of the support."

"Thank you to Governor Mills and New Balance for helping to reinforce my belief in the value of teamwork and that if you stick to something and keep working, you can make anything happen," Flagg said in the release from the Governor's Office.

Flagg has an endorsement deal with Boston-based New Balance, which has a significant presence in Maine, including a Skowhegan manufacturing facility that's only about 25 miles from his childhood home in Newport.

New Balance is celebrating "Cooper Flagg Day" by raising flags at the Skowhegan facility and the company's manufacturing facility in Norway, Maine, on Wednesday.

The 2025 NBA Draft gets underway at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, with coverage from ABC/ESPN.

To celebrate Flagg's accomplishments, and in some cases, raise money for good causes, some local businesses are hosting draft night watch parties.
