So, given that, how do we know which states rank higher or lower on a list like this—and who is making the call?

WalletHub determined the most overweight and obese states in America by comparing all 50 states and Washington, D.C. across three main categories: Obesity & Overweight Prevalence, Health Consequences, and Food & Fitness. Using 31 weighted metrics graded on a 100-point scale, they calculated each state’s overall score and ranked them accordingly.

Okay, with that established, where does Maine rank in terms of overweight and obesity compared to other states?

Again, according to WalletHub and their recent report highlighting the ‘Most Overweight & Obese States in America,’ Maine ranked 11th overall.

Maine ranked 29th in obesity and overweight prevalence, 2nd in health consequences, and 16th in food and fitness, according to the report.

However, the state ranked 49th in the percentage of adults eating fewer than 1 serving of fruit or vegetables per day.
