Meet Maine’s Penobscot Firefighter of the Year
"It's very, very hard to accept awards when it's such a pleasure to serve the community." - Penobscot County Firefighter of the Year Steve DeWitt
On a Thursday evening in early September 2024, Levant Firefighter Steve DeWitt was on the phone with a local radio morning show to try and schedule an interview and brainstorm on ways to get the residents of Maine involved and educated on fire safety and aware about Fire Prevention Week beginning October 6th.
DeWitt had to end the call because he was en route to (what he thought was) a meeting with other fire departments in Maine to share the success that Levant Fire has had with their Spark Pug Academy that educates future, young "firefighters." Firefighter Steve was also hoping to learn from the other fire departments as well, but he would soon only learn that this was all a ploy to celebrate his benevolence.
I share that story, because this is a perfect example of who Firefighter Steve DeWitt is. He loves his community and sharing what he knows so that may keep the residents that he cares so deeply about, safe. He doesn't do it for praise or for the accolades.
DeWitt had no idea that he was actually walking into a surprise honor for him where he would receive a well-earned prestigious award witnessed by many of his loved ones. And just before doing so, DeWitt was busy planning the next way that he could help his neighbors and fellow neighbors.
Firefighter Steve DeWitt shared that he humbly accepts the award on behalf of the Levant Fire Department and that he is a proud representative of everything that his colleagues at Levant strive for. We are honored to have you as a friend and a part of our community OC DeWitt! Congratulations!
