A Kennebunkport man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for setting fire to his restaurant two years ago, the state fire marshal’s office announced Wednesday.

Karl Maine, 59, was sentenced Tuesday in York County Superior Court to 16 years in prison with all but eight years suspended.

Earlier this year, Maine was convicted of arson in connection with the Feb. 2014 fire at Jake’s Diner on Route 25 in Limington.

Surveillance video from a neighboring store showed Maine leaving the restaurant and smoke billowing from a rear storage room a few moments later.

Fire investigators said Maine started the fire to get out of about $7,000 of debt from the business. The building, which had a value of $142,000, was destroyed in the fire.
