It was in December of 2020 when a handful of Maine Burger King restaurants closed down for good. The restaurants were all owned by Steve Wegner and included the shops on Hogan Road in Bangor, High Street in Ellsworth, Stillwater Avenue in Orono, and Camden Street in Rockland.

The properties all went up for auction in March of 2021.

The Stillwater Avenue location reopened as the new China Garden and the Ellsworth location was scheduled to become a new Mexican restaurant in June of 2021.

But the Hogan Road Burger King has just been sitting there, vacant, since it closed. A few years back, someone came and tagged the building with graffiti. It's become a bit of a BK eyesore for Bangor.

So when news hit this week that it was in the process of being slated for demolition, that caught our attention.

Bangor's top Code Enforcement official, Jeff Wallace, says with any luck, some new life will be coming to that old location. But they're going to start with a clean slate.

"I’m assembling all I need to sign the demo permit."

Approval to level the old building and construct a new, 3150-square-foot retail store came during a meeting of the Bangor City Council Planning Board on November 11th of last year.

At that meeting, Andy Johnston, one of the engineers from Atlantic Resource Consultants, the firm working on the project, explained that they plan to do a lot of sprucing up at the location on the corner of Hogan Road and Springer Drive.

"We hope this will be a good redevelopment project and a reuse of an existing vacant site, that will not only benefit that site but also tidy up the scenery of that area and hopefully bring a little life to it."

Johnston went on to say that the old building was in such a state of deterioration, that is was unsalvageable. The new construction will make use of existing utility lines and also allow for a loading zone and some extra parking. They do plan to reorient the building in a way that makes it a little easier to access from the Springer Drive entrance.

Demolition of the old building can take place as soon as the permits are issued, with the rebuild taking place shortly after.

The new building will be home to a Verizon retail store.
