Road Trip Idea: The Belfast Ice Festival Is This Weekend!

What started as a way to get folks in Waldo County outside and enjoying some fresh air during the pandemic has morphed into something that folks in the area look forward to each year. Now it's an opportunity, as organizers say, to show folks that "Downtown Belfast can be enjoyed year-round" and not just in the summer months.

This weekend kicks off the '5th Annual Belfast Ice Festival and State Carving Championship.' This three day event promises to be full of frozen fun for all ages!

The festivities will start Friday, February 27th with ice sculptures on display throughout downtown, a snowbunny building area for the kiddos, an 'Ice and Ales' tour of ice bars throughout town and a 'Frost and Flannel Ice Ball' at the Belfast Boat House, among other things.

"Come take a walk and visit the ice sculptures that will be located throughout downtown Belfast. Take a break and have a drink at one of the ice bars or participate in one of the many outdoor activities Belfast has to offer throughout the winter. If you’re visiting from out of town, make it a weekend!"

The fun continues through Saturday the 28th and Sunday March 1st, too, with live demonstrations, food trucks, crafts and more. Many local businesses take the opportunity to offer themed specials or activities to do with winter or ice.

The State Carving Championships will take place on Friday and Saturday, but the sculptures will remain on display through Sunday, if you want to just come take a look at the finished products.
