Growing up, one of my favorite summertime activities was when my mom would load up the minivan and we'd head out to a local farm to pick our own strawberries!

There's something so perfect and so summer about picking and eating a ripe, red berry straight from the land it grew on! It took my siblings and me no time to fill those green paper cartons full to the top. The sides would be berry-stained by the end of the ride home as we taste-tested our haul.

I'm happy to report that it is once again Strawberry Picking Season here in Maine, and from all accounts, it looks and sounds like this year's crop is a delicious one, despite all of the rain!

If you want to try your hand at picking strawberries, here are a couple of spots within a 10 to 20-minute drive of Bangor, where you can pick your own.

1.) Treworgy Family Orchard: Located right off of Union St. in Levant, with plenty of signs along the way to point you in the right direction, Treworgy's is a family-friendly farm. They just celebrated their 40th year of Strawberry picking with their first-ever Strawberry Festival! Go just for the berries or make an afternoon of it, as they have plenty of other things going on at the farm. Treworgy's updates its berry-picking schedule right up on its website and Facebook page, so make sure you check that out before you go. (Most days, it's 8 AM to 4 PM.) They also tend to have strawberries for sale at a local farm stand out by Gifford's on Broadway in Bangor, too.

2.) RJ Hall's Family Farm (Formerly Tate's Strawberry Farm) in East Corinth: Located at 136 Puddledock Rd. in East Corinth, this farm has grown strawberries for generations, and is well known for having some of the yummiest berries around! According to their Facebook page, "We are open today rain or shine until 6PM. The picking is great. U-Pick is $6.00/quart. Please message us here or call (207)285-2035 with any questions!!"

You can also check this site for a list of other pick-your-own farms throughout the state.

If you'd prefer to have your berries picked for you, there are a number of farm stands across the state where you can grab a quart or two.

Enjoy!
