Apple Maps vehicles have been spotted around the Bangor area. What are they up to?

Apple Maps vehicles have been spotted around the Bangor area lately. The fancy white vans with an array of cameras and sensors are hard to miss. According to Apple, their fleet of mapping vehicles are collecting data in Maine until June 10. They began their quest to map Maine late last month.

The photo example of the Apple vehicles above was taken in New Hampshire recently. The vehicles are equipped with LIDAR, GPS systems, a wheel encoder and 360-cameras. The aim of the deployed vehicles is to collect data that's used to improve Apple Maps in future updates.

According to MacRumors.com, Apple Maps has been primarily working to collect data to expand its 3-D Street View feature.

Like Google Street View, any published imagery collected by Apple Maps will blur a passerby's face and license plate.
