A Greenfield man is facing charges after being stopped by police twice in one night while driving the wrong way on I95.

Maine State Police first encountered 51-year-old James Ahern after receiving a report, just before 8 p.m. Saturday, of a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lane of the interstate in Houlton. Troopers were able to stop the vehicle, without incident, in Smyrna. Ahern was behind the wheel and was issued a summons for driving to endanger and was released. Police say, at that point, there was no indication that Ahern was impaired.

About an hour later, at 9 PM, State Police received another report of a driver traveling northbound in the southbound lane on I-95 in Medway. Maine State Troopers and members of the Aroostook County Sheriff's Office responded, but the vehicle ran out of gas before they could get set up to stop it. Ahern was arrested and transported to the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton. At this point, he was charged with operating under the influence, two counts of reckless conduct, and operating the wrong way on a divided highway.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
