A sudden drop in temperatures during Friday night's rainstorm caused multiple accidents, including a fatal in Greenbush, and an 11-vehicle pile-up in Pittsfield.

State Police say the multi-vehicle crash began on I-95 when a vehicle skidded off the roadway, into the median, and a wrecker was called to the scene. As troopers arrived, the pavement because ice-covered and other vehicles were unable to stop as they entered the crash zone. The interstate had to be closed for two hours as secondary accidents blocked both northbound lanes. In all, nine passenger vehicles, a wrecker, and a tractor trailer were involved. Troopers helped the motorists to a high embankment along the road for their safety, as vehicles continued to crash. Only one person was hurt, and they had minor injuries.

In Greenbush, WABI-TV reports one person was killed in a 3-vehicle pile-up on Maine Road at around 8:00 Friday night. The victim's name has not been released. State Police say icy road conditions contributed to the accident.

We'll update this story as more details become available.
