A softball tournament Sunday in Skowhegan is named for a fallen Sheriff's Corporal, and will benefit the family of a fallen State Police Detective.

It was an impossibly tough year for law enforcement. First came the senseless death of Somerset County Sheriff's Corporal Eugene Cole, at the hands of John Williams. Then, just under a year later, Maine State Police Detective Benjamin Campbell was killed in a freak accident while helping a stranded motorist.

So, this Sunday's softball tournament will honor both men. The tournament is named for Corporal Cole, and the proceeds of the day will benefit Detective Campbell's family. An opening ceremony at 7:30 Saturday morning will kick things off and then teams made up of law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel will take to the field. Games start at 8.

There will be plenty of refreshments available, so bring money and enjoy the day. Spectators are encouraged to attend and cheer on the teams as they pay tribute to their fallen brothers and raise money for a family left alone far too soon. Find more information on the event's Facebook page. I expect there will be a few tears, a lot of laughs, and plenty of fun for everyone.
