Confirmed Case Of Rabies Found In Augusta, Maine Skunk

Here is another reminder of why you need to steer clear of wild animals, especially if they are acting particularly friendly.

According to a press release from the City of Augusta, the Maine Centers for Disease Control & Prevention have recently confirmed a case of rabies in a skunk from Augusta.

Based on the information provided in the press release, it appears the skunk may have been captured in the Northern Avenue area.  The press release specifically asks residents of that part of the city who spot wild animals that are acting strangely to call the Augusta Police Department at 207.626.2370.

The press release goes on to say that you should keep an eye on your pets and make sure their vaccinations are up to date.

So, what is rabies?

According to Wikipedia, rabies is a virus that causes inflammation in the brains of humans and other animals.  Typically, it is spread through the saliva of an infected animal.  As a result, it can be transmitted through a bite, scratch, or through the saliva coming in contact with an open wound or other opening (nose, eyes, mouth).  That is why it is so important to stay clear of potentially infected animals.

It is almost 100% fatal.  As of 2016, only fourteen people had survived a rabies infection after showing symptoms.  Sadly, about 59,000 people worldwide still die of it each year.
