The U.S. Coast Guard was at it again, this time 35 miles east of Nantucket.

This past Sunday afternoon at 12:50, the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England Command Center were notified by the captain of the 80 foot fishing vessel, Mariner, that a 45 year-old crewmen was experiencing chest pains.

The Coast Guard duty Flight Surgeon was consulted and then suggested a medevac as there were concerns that the crewman's condition could worsen if left untreated.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew left Coast Guard Airstation Cape Cod and flew the 35 some miles east of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and eventually hoisted the ailing crewmen from the Mariner aboard.  The weather on the water during the operation yesterday consisted of 4 foot seas and 20 mph winds.

The fisherman was taken to the shore where emergency medical services then transported him to a hospital on Cape Cod.  There is  no word on his condition as of this writing.

The U.S.Coast Guard has been busy in the area this month, joining up with the Canadian Coast Guard in a huge effort to rescue 130 fishermen off the coast of Nova Scotia, and then sending crews to bust up the ice on the Penobscot River between Bucksport and Bangor, like they do every year.

Here in eastern Maine, the Coast Guard has bases in Rockland, Southwest Harbor, Jonesport and Eastport, and with such a huge fishing community and hundreds working on the water, it's real nice to know that they're there.
