A Dexter man was apprehended by Deputies after a standoff, during which he wielded an ax.

A Report of a Family Fight Sent Deputies to Five Road in Carmel

Eugene Woodard, 44, of Dexter is charged with criminal trespass and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.

It was approximately 4:30 Monday afternoon when the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office responded to a reported family fight on the Five Road in Carmel. The property owner told authorities that a family member who had been issued a criminal trespass notice not to be on the property had shown up and refused to leave. The individual, later identified as Woodard, allegedly threatened a family member, saying that he would break the door down to the locked home to gain entry if not allowed inside.

The Suspect in Carmel was Armed With an Ax and a Large Knife

A member of the Sheriff's Office Command Staff was the first to arrive and found Woodard armed with an ax and a large knife. Authorities say he allegedly refused to follow commands when told to drop the weapons, while making comments that he was ready for a fight and would have to be shot before leaving the property. During this exchange, he allegedly made movements towards the home where family members were locked inside.

Penobscot County Deputies Got the Carmel Suspect Under Control

Several members of the Sheriff's Department responded and set up a perimeter, including a deputy Woodard knew from previous encounters and with whom he had a good rapport.After much negotiation, Woodard agreed to drop his weapons and surrender, but while trying to move the suspect to a police vehicle, he became combative and resisted attempts to move him to jail. He was eventually subdued and taken to the Penobscot County Jail.
