South Brewer will once again have a neighborhood bar when the newly rebuilt Cap's Tavern opens Friday.

It's been a long journey, since the original Cap's building burned in July. The staff had just gone home when crews were called to the old wooden structure on South Main Street in Brewer. Fire investigators ruled the cause as arson, but so far no arrests have been made.

Owner Del Merritt has said he wasn't sure he wanted to rebuild after the fire. But the enthusiasm of his staff and his customers bolstered his spirits and he decided that South Brewer really deserved to have a neighborhood bar. And locals are very grateful for that decision, especially since the other watering hole, the Brookside Tavern, recently closed its doors.

The new building has a bigger main bar, so will be able to accommodate more customers. However, it doesn't have the designated 'Jam' space where local musicians would gather each weekend, and Merritt says they've lost some storage space. But his desire to provide a nice neighborhood bar has been realized with a big, beautiful new facility.

The all-new Cap's Tavern encourages folks to stop by and have 'Just One More' (as the sign says) starting at 11 a.m. on Friday.
