The One Place in Maine Where You’re Almost Guaranteed to See a Moose

One of the great things about living in Maine or visiting the state is the opportunity to see some beautiful wildlife.

In fact, one of the most majestic animals you'll find in Maine is the moose.

According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, "Maine is home to the highest moose population in the lower 48 states."

If you're hoping to catch a glimpse of Maine's official state animal, there are a number of areas throughout the state that are known for moose viewing.

Seeing Moose at Moosehead Lake in Maine

According to Destination Moosehead Lake, in this area, "moose outnumber people 3 to 1."

Moosehead Lake is the largest lake in Maine and one of the largest freshwater lakes in the country.

The lake is 40 miles long and covers nearly 75,000 acres.

Seeing Moose at Lazy Tom Bog in Maine

One of the best places to spot a moose is around Lazy Tom Bog, which is located in Kokadjo, a small town east of Moosehead Lake.

Lazy Tom Bog is a short distance from Kokadjo Trading Post and the cabins on First Roach Pond.

According to Kokadjo.com, it has the highest concentration of moose in Maine.

When is the best time to spot a moose in Maine?

Wildlife officials say the best times of year to moose watch is mid-May through July and then in the fall during their breeding season.

The early morning hours and dusk are some of the best times of day to spot moose, the largest animal in Maine.

There are a number of companies that operate moose viewing tours in the Moosehead Lake Region, including Northwoods Outfitters, Northeast Whitewater, and the Birches Resort.

When it comes to moose watching, Moosehead Lake is definitely one of our favorite spots.
