According to the Maine Campground Owners Association, the state has over 175 licensed campgrounds.
There are many options when choosing the perfect spot to enjoy the Maine outdoors, so here's a quick list to give you a few ideas if you're planning a camping adventure.
Baxter State Park in Millinocket, Maine
Baxter State Park covers more than 209,000 acres and contains 10 campgrounds.
According to the park's website, South Branch Pond is very popular and is the largest campground in the park.
It's located 33.5 miles west of Patten and provides visitors with opportunities to go hiking, swimming, fishing, and canoeing.
Hermit Island Campground in Phippsburg, Maine
Hermit Island Campground opened in 1952.
According to the campground's website, "There are 271 sites spread across the southern end of the island, each unique."
The campground provides access to several short hiking trails and a number of beaches, including Head Beach, a public beach located near the campground's entrance.
Coos Canyon Campground in Byron, Maine
Coos Canyon Campground is located in Byron.
The campground has cabins available and offers sites for tents and RVs.
The campground's website calls it "the ideal basecamp for exploring the captivating beauty of Coos Canyon and the serene tranquility of the Swift River."
The area is known as a great spot for hiking, fishing and even gold panning.
Acadia National Park in Maine
Acadia National Park has two campgrounds on Mount Desert Island, one on the Schoodic Peninsula, and five lean-to shelters on Isle au Haut.
One of the more popular campgrounds is Blackwoods.
All Blackwoods sites are within a 10-minute walk of the ocean.
The campground provides flush toilets, running water, and a dump station.
Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Campground in Freeport, Maine
Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Campground covers 626 acres and four miles of oceanfront.
According to the campground's website, it offers spectacular views, bike and kayak rentals, farm-based activities and hiking trails.
The campground is close to L.L. Bean's flagship store, so if you need any outdoor gear or apparel, you don't have to go far.
