It was a touching display of sportsmanship Saturday at the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K race in Cape Elizabeth when one runner sacrificed first place to help another across the finish line. Robert Gomez of Windham said another competitor, Jesse Orach of Gorham had a commanding lead and there was no way that he could catch him, until the front-runner collapsed just 100 meters from the finish line. Rather than taking the lead and finishing in first, Gomez helped him to his feet and the two crossed the line together, with Orach taking the first place prize and Gomez finishing in second.
