Within the last few weeks I've had a number of friends and co-workers talk about their upcoming getaway vacations, all of which don't include ice and snow. Yes, I'm jealous and I covet their ability to fly away to sand and palm trees. But it got me to thinking, Shirley and I have never--at least together--escaped to warmer climates in the dead of winter in Maine, when most seem to be tired of the ice, snow, frigid temps, power outages, dead batteries, frozen pipes, flooded basements, colds and flus, and so on.

I once visited Florida in early February in 1995, and I thought I was in heaven. I returned to a major snowstorm in progress with sub-zero temps. I felt badly leaving Shirley behind, but it was a business trip. Believe me when I tell you that I downplayed my experience to my honey bun.
