A University of Maine student was taken to the hospital after being hit by a school van.

The Student Was Taken to a Local Hospital

University officials say the incident happened just before 9:30 Friday morning. A University vehicle struck a student on Long Road at the University of Maine Campus in Orono, near Jenness Hall. Emergency services responded quickly and the student was transported to a local hospital. There's no word on how badly they were hurt but university officials say the student's family has been informed of the incident.

Police Are Hoping to Hear From People Who Witnessed the Incident

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway and officials expect more details to be released when they become available. Long Road was closed for a time but has since reopened. Anyone who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact Lieutenant Noel Santiago with the University of Maine Police

Counseling Services Are Available to Students

A post on the University of Maine's website says counseling services and support are available for students, faculty, or staff who may have been affected. The Counseling Center can be reached at 207-581-1393 or people can call the Dean of Students Office at 207-581-1406.
