How Much Snow Should We Have, and How Cold Should It Be?

High today in Bangor expected to be 50. Remember it is  December 6^th.

If you are starting to get used to these mild temperatures this month, and starting to get used to the precipitation this month being rain instead of snow in the Bangor area, and you are wondering if you’re dreaming that these are ‘normal’, sorry you’re wrong.

Here are the averages for December for Bangor  based on weather data collected from 1991 to 2020 by the US National Centers for Environmental Information. (From Current Results)

First with an expected high of 50 today, here is a look at the average December high temperatures.

So today it'll be 15 degrees above average. And with rain expected later, the average December amounts of snow

And we may well still get all those 74.6inches of snow this winter, and who knows maybe lots more.  However it sure looks like we are off to a slow start, as we are not that far away from the actual beginning of winter.

So first let us compare the temperatures in Bangor from the start of December until the end of December (showing that for the first third of the month this year we are definitely milder)

So I’m no Meteorologist, but we are milder and more often than not have snow on the ground by this time in December.

However, I am also enough of a Mainer to know this all might go out the window with a big time snowfall soon.

Even though it’s not in the forecast.
