Bangor area residents interested in becoming a Red Cross volunteer will have a chance this weekend to receive the necessary training.

The free training program will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Brewer Community Center on Cutler Place in Brewer.

It's part of the organization's Zero2Hero program.

Trainees will acquire the skills necessary to become a disaster response volunteer, assessing each victim's needs and helping them begin the recovery process, and a shelter volunteer, assisting in establishing a shelter to temporary house individuals displaced by a large-scale disaster.

“Currently, the Red Cross in Maine has more than 1,100 volunteers,” said Danielle Hardré, Disaster Program Manager for the Red Cross in Northern and Eastern Maine. “Having a strong volunteer base will ensure the Red Cross is able to provide local assistance when disasters strike.”

Individuals interested in signing up for the Zero2Hero program can do so by logging onto MaineRedCross.org or by contacting Danielle Hardre by email at Danielle.hardre@redcross.org.
