Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval was benched Thursday after admitting to using his cell phone to check his Instagram account during Wednesday's loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Sandoval used the phone to "like" a woman's photographs after entering the clubhouse to use the bathroom.

“I make a mistake yesterday,” Sandoval said. “I’ll learn from that. I’m a human being. I make mistakes. I let my teammates down. Ain’t going to happen no more.”

The team has a policy that prohibits players from using cell phones during games.

The Red Sox have lost eight of their last nine games. Boston is 11 games under .500 and nine games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.
