Living here in Maine the chances are pretty good that you'll see a moose from a good, safe distance before the good Lord calls ya home. And every once in a while a moose gets up close and personal, like it did for a Vermont man, recently.

And believe me, my friend, they are as big as they look, and sometimes just as dangerous.

This past spring, Shirley and I ventured back home after visiting her folks in the sleepy, rural town of Otis, Maine. About five miles into the drive a bull moose crossed the road in front of us. Fortunately we were able to slow in time for the beast to cross without either of us getting hurt. But you quickly realize how small you and car is compared to such a monster, and why many people never survive such a collision.
