A 3-month old child suffered a skull fracture after he was thrown down a flight of stairs. Police have charged his father with assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says William Lord Jr., 39, of Wayne was arrested after his son was taken to Maine General in Augusta, where he's being treated. Police say the 3-month-old was in a child safety seat when it was thrown down the stairs. The baby was not secured in the seat and struck his head. The injury is not believed to be life threatening.

Police say Lord, who was intoxicated at the time, apparently went to bed after the child's mother, Ericka Melanson took her son to the hospital. He was awakened Monday morning by a PA system from the State Police tactical team after an arrest warrant had been issued. Lord walked outside and was taken into custody. Another child who lives at the house wasn't injured.
