A Freeport woman was killed in an early morning fire at her home.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the body of 68-year-old Donelda Madore was found near the stairs in the living room of her split story ranch. Fire investigators say it appears she was overcome by heavy smoke as she tried to escape the home. Three others in the house were able to get out without injury.

The fire on Wardtown Road was reported at around 1 a.m. by 69-year-old David Madore, who woke up to find the house filled with smoke. Madore and two other adults were able to escape, and Madore attempted to get back inside to save his wife, but the heavy smoke forced him back outside. Investigators say the fire started in the attic. The roof was burned off the house, which also sustained heavy fire and water damage.
