Why is Earth Day Important?

The purpose of Earth Day is to raise awareness for environmental causes. And according to EarthDay.org in 1970 thanks to Earth Day, the Clean Water Act was passed. Also President Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency.

Why was Earth Day created?

Before 1970, there were basically no laws protecting the environment. Factories pumped out as much smoke as they wanted. Toxic waste could be dumped in rivers. And it was perfectly legal.

Who started Earth Day?

Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. There was also a college student named Denis Hayes who gets some credit for being involved in the process, and for helping the coordination of creation of Earth Day.

Also thousands of colleges and other schools and many thousands of students were active initially in the Earth Day movement.
