The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says a man accused of attempting to break into a Windham pizza shop became combative and grabbed a deputy's gun as he was being placed under arrest.

Deputies responded to the Little Caesars on Roosevelt Trail early Monday morning after receiving a report of a man attempting to breaking into the business, the sheriff's office said in a new release Monday afternoon.

After deputies approached the man, who was later identified as Richard Valliere, 40, of New Gloucester, he became "confrontational and assaultive," the release said.

According to deputies, when Valliere was told he was being placed under arrest he grabbed a deputy's holstered handgun.

A struggle ensued as the suspect attempted to remove the gun from the deputy's holster, the release said.

A second deputy used a Taser on Valliere, but that did not immediately bring the struggle to an end.

Eventually, Valliere was subdued and taken into custody.

He was transported to the Cumberland County Jail in Portland and charges with refusing to submit to arrest or detention, assault on an officer and disorderly conduct.

Bail was set at $3,000.

His arraignment was set for April 12.
