Bangor is famous for various things, but its skyline isn't typically at the forefront. When people think of Bangor, they usually picture Stephen and Tabitha King's house, the Paul Bunyan statue, and, of course, the fantastic local radio stations. But let me tell you, Bangor's cityscape is wicked underrated, and it's about time we give it the recognition it deserves.

When we talk about a skyline, we're referring to the distinctive outline or shape of a city as seen from a distance. And Bangor's skyline is not to be underestimated. Nestled amidst a foreground of lush greenery, the city's skyline pays homage to its significant role in the lumbering industry during the nineteenth century. Showcasing several trees, a reminder of Bangor's historic connection to the timber trade.

When you think of the natural elements in Bangor, it's impossible not to mention the waterfront. On a beautiful sunny day, Bangor reflects perfectly onto the mighty Penobscot River. The city's beauty merges seamlessly with the stunning scenery, creating a mesmerizing sight.

But it's not just the natural elements that make Bangor's skyline special. The city boasts a number of recognizable structures that contribute to its charm. From the downtown parking garage to the Eaton Peabody/Dead River company building, the Bangor Daily News headquarters, the Maine Savings Amphitheater, and the Hollywood Casino Bangor, the skyline offers a diverse array of architectural gems. One of the best parts is that since Bangor stretches alongside the river, the skyline seems to stretch on forever, offering different and unique perspectives when viewed from different parts of Brewer.

Let's not forget the bridges that lead towards the city, contributing to the skyline. The Penobscot River Bridge, the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge, the historic Bangor-Brewer Railroad Bridge, and the Veterans Remembrance Bridge elegantly connect the twin cities of Brewer and Bangor. These structures not only serve as functional pathways but also add to the visual appeal of the area.

Now, my personal favorite aspect of the skyline (and Bangor, in general)—the steeples. These towering structures punctuate the sky and stand proudly over the Queen City of the East. Against the trees, their vibrant green tips create a stunning contrast. These steeples are a testament to the strong religious heritage of old New England and add a touch of elegance to the overall cityscape. I love steeples.

It's high time we shine a spotlight on Bangor’s underrated skyline, and finally give it the flowers that it's owed. Beauty in a cityscape does not necessitate a resemblance to New York, Chicago, or Boston. Unique charm and distinct character can create equally captivating and beautiful landscapes.
