Brewer police reported today that one woman is dead following a head-on collision between two sport utility vehicles. The accident happened just before 1:00 on Monday afternoon next to the Brewer Auditorium.

Deputy Chief Jason Moffitt said in a press release on Tuesday that a Mercury Mariner driven by Sandra Wheeler, age 75 of Brewer, was traveling toward Bangor on Wilson Street when it crossed the center line. The SUV veered into the path of a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Richard Brescia, age 47 of Brunswick. Brescia tried but was unable to avoid being hit head-on by the SUV. Sandra Wheeler was pronounced dead at Eastern Maine Medical Center sometime later.

Officers at the scene determined that Wheeler had suffered a major medical event, which caused her to lose control of her vehicle. Witnesses told police that Mrs. Wheeler was seen slumped over the wheel and the SUV was weaving before the crash. Investigators say it was the medical event and not the low-speed crash that caused her death.
