Police are investigating the discovery of a Damariscotta woman's body inside an overturned car in Waldoboro.

WABI-TV reports the vehicle was found in the Medomak River on Sunday morning, with the body of 48-year-old Melissa Sawyer inside. Investigators say the car was spotted in the water just before 7 a.m. near the intersection of Route 1 and Route 32.

While first responders were on the scene very quickly, they weren't immediately able to tell if anyone was in the vehicle. It took a crane to get the car out of the water and that's when Sawyer's body was discovered. Police say she had worked as a secretary at the middle school in Waldoboro for many years and was well-liked.

The accident remains under investigation.
