Maine State Police had responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash near mile marker 19 on I-95. The crash turned out to be a slide-off into the median. No one was hurt in that accident.
While the crash scene was being cleared, three Troopers had parked their marked cruisers, with their emergency lights activated, to divert traffic away from the crash site.
Trooper Caldeira was sitting in his marked Ford Explorer cruiser, with his emergency lights on, when he was hit from behind by a Mercedes-Benz sedan, driven by Kifayatullah.
Caldeira and Kifayatullah were taken to York Hospital for evaluation of possible minor injuries.
