Every year, Forbes releases its list of the 400 wealthiest living Americans, and making that list isn’t easy—you’d need a net worth of at least $3.3 billion in 2024 just to qualify. Only one Mainer made the cut this time around, which makes identifying the state’s wealthiest individual a pretty straightforward task.

Now that we’ve addressed that, who exactly is the richest individual in Maine, who also happens to be the state’s only billionaire?

According to Forbes, Susan Alfond is estimated to have a net worth of $3.6 billion as of May 6th, 2025, placing her just outside the top 1,000 richest people in the world. In the 2024 Forbes 400 list, she ranked 388th overall.

Alfond and her three siblings inherited their wealth from their father, Harold Alfond, who founded Dexter Shoe Company in Maine after buying an old mill in 1958.

Harold Alfond sold the company to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in 1993 for $420 million in stock, which has since grown to be worth billions.

And there you have it—Maine’s wealthiest person, and our only billionaire, is Susan Alfond, with an estimated net worth of $3.6 billion, as of May 6th, 2025.
