A 2-year-old Waterville child is hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head.

Waterville Police received a 911 call just before noon on January 2nd, to a report of a shooting on Western Avenue. Responding officers found a 2-year-old child with a gunshot wound to the head. The boy was initially transported to Thayer Hospital in Waterville, and later transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland. At last report, he was listed in critical condition.

An investigation revealed that one of the three siblings living in the home had found the gun secured in a closet. They loaded it and a round was fired, striking the 2-year-old.

This incident remains under investigation by Waterville Police and the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit.
