A quiet stroll on the Brewer Riverwalk turned exciting on Saturday when we spotted this daring person riding a foil surfboard in the Penobscot.

What is A Foil Surfboard?

Have you ever heard of a foil surfboard? I never had, until I saw one for myself on Saturday. As my family and I waited for the start of the Shriner parade, we decided to take a quick walk on the Riverwalk. It was a beautiful day, with endless sunshine, a nice breeze, and lots of blue water. We came across some friends and stopped to chat when one of the kids pointed out a person who was 'flying over the water.' This is what we saw.

How Does it Work?

I asked our friend if he knew what the person was riding and he told me it must be a foil surfboard. Of course, the always-curious news person in me had to look it up when I got home.  It's really cool. The foil, that sits under the surfboard, rides the current, and the surfer helps propel it by pumping it up and down.

What Happens When The Foil Doesn't Respond Right?

I filmed the talented rider until, suddenly, he must have hit a rip current, or some other change in the water, so it took his board down beneath the surface. What do you do then? Swim. This person was a talented swimmer who made it all the way over to the dock. They were wearing a wet suit, which I'm sure helped them with buoyancy in the chilly water. All in all, I have to say that I was impressed.
