Washington County Man Okay After ATV Broke Through Thin Ice
A Baileyville man escaped injury when his ATV fell through thin ice in Washington County.
Warden Service Corporal John MacDonald says 56-year-old Mike Murphy was riding his ATV on Grand Falls Flowage Tuesday, which is across from the Squirrel Point boat landing. At about 3:00, some ice fishermen saw his Can-Am break through the ice into open water. Murphy wasn't hurt and was able to make his way to Wells Island to wait for help. Wardens say poor ice conditions between the island and the mainland prevented him from getting back to safety on his own. Officials say the ice conditions are often poor in this area.
Baileyville Fire Chief John McPhee, along with Game Wardens Brad Richard and Joey Gardner used the Maine Warden Service airboat to reach Murphy while the ATV was retrieved and towed back to shore. Assisting in the rescue were the Baileyville Fire and Police Departments, Passamaquoddy Warden Service, Downeast EMS, and the Maine State Police.
