In response to escalating theft and its impact on profits, Target has revised some of its already strictly enforced policies.

According to a report from Rosenblum Law, Target has lowered the threshold for employee intervention from $100 to $50. This adjustment, which took effect during the summer of 2024, aims to enhance store security and safeguard both employees and customers.

Additionally, Target has implemented measures such as limiting the number of items allowed at self-checkout stations to further deter theft.

This policy change follows the closure of nine Target locations in the fall of 2023, including stores in San Francisco, Seattle, Portland (not our Portland), and Manhattan's Harlem neighborhood, due to theft and organized retail crime compromising safety and business viability.

Now, having covered that, what updated policy is Target really cracking down on that could potentially lead to a lifetime ban from Maine stores?

Recently, Target updated its shoplifting policy to ban accused shoplifters from the store for life. If someone attempts to return after being banned, they could face arrest and trespassing charges. This policy is part of Target’s effort to crack down on theft and ensure the safety of its stores.

And there you have it—if you shoplift from Target, you may now face a lifetime ban.
