A fire at the Village Green motel in Brewer has left several people homeless.

Crews were called to the motel on Mullen Way at around 1:30 Sunday morning. WABI-TV reports everyone made it out safely. The building was heavily damaged by fire, as was a vehicle in the front.

Red Cross officials are helping 21 people displaced by the fire, with everything from interim housing to basic necessities. The State Fire Marshal's Office will now investigate to determine how it started.

The motel that sits between State and Wilson Streets in Brewer has seen its share of problems, over the years. In 2019, police gathered for a standoff with a man who was brandishing an AK-47 rifle.  Gary Green was convicted of criminal threatening and terrorizing.

In 2012, two people were arrested for knocking on people's doors at the motel and then threatening them with a machete. According to the BDN, Jason Brown and Maria Pounds, who did not live at the motel, were charged with felony burglary and assault.
