Video of Maine Woman Killed in 2010 by a Suspected Serial Killer
New York Police have released what's believed to be the final video of a Maine woman who was killed by a suspected serial killer.
What are the Details of the Long Island Killer Cold Case?
Megan Waterman of Scarborough was just 22-years-old when she disappeared in June of 2010. Her skeletal remains would eventually be found along Ocean Parkway, near Gilgo Beach on Long Island in December of that year, as part of the search for another missing woman, Shannan Gilbert. Shannan had gone missing in May. In all, Suffolk County Police would uncover the remains of 7 different women, one Asian male, and an unidentified toddler along the same stretch of road. Several of the women who died were working as escorts through Craigslist, including Waterman.
The murderer became known as the Long Island Killer, who is believed to be responsible for the murders of between 10 and 16 people. The Suffolk County, New York Police are tasked with solving the cold case murders of 9 of those victims, including Megan Waterman.
Where Was the Video Taken?
On Wednesday, police released a surveillance video from the Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge, New York, of Megan Waterman. Police believe that when she left the hotel on the day this video was taken, she was going to meet her killer. Now, they're hoping to hear from anyone who may remember something about that night. A reward for information that leads to the killer's identity and prosecution has been doubled from $25,00 to $50,00 and a website has been set up to offer information about the case.
Did the Killer Leave Any Other Evidence Behind?
The only other piece of evidence offered on the website, other than pictures of jewelry found near the remains, is a piece of a belt with the letters 'WH' or HM' embossed on it. Officials say the belt doesn't belong to any of the victims and is believed to have belonged to the killer.
This investigation is ongoing.
