Two people are facing charges for allegedly trafficking in heroin. The arrests are the result of a month long investigation by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency's Down East Task Force.

The MDEA said in a press release that over the past several weeks, investigators from the Ellsworth-based task force have been conducting an investigation into the distribution of heroin by Gorham Clifton of Orland. Undercover agents were able to purchase the drug from Clifton at his home on the Gilpin Road.

At around 7:30 Sunday night, law enforcement from several agencies executed a search warrant at Clifton's house. Seized during the raid was approximately 72 grams of heroin, with a street value approaching $10,000, along with other evidence of drug trafficking.

Clifton was arrested and charged with Class B Trafficking in Schedule W Drugs (heroin) and taken to the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth where bail was set at $5,000. Also charged with the same offense is 25-year-old Naomi Thomas, who was  living at the Gilpin Road home with Clifton. Due to the weight of the drugs seized, police say the charge could be elevated to Class 'A' Trafficking.

The Maine Drug Enforcement Agency was assisted in this investigation by the Hancock County Sheriff's Department, the Maine State Police, and the Ellsworth Police Department.

The Maine DEA said in the press release that, with this arrest, a significant heroin distribution source in Western Hancock County was disrupted. These agencies, it went on to say, remain committed to working together in order to have the most significant impact on the flow of heroin and other illicit drugs in Hancock County.
