According to the Oxford Dictionary a sandwich is "An item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal. So does that make a hot dog a sandwich?

I recently stopped at a local restaurant for a light dinner. I was looking to have something light like a wrap or a club sandwich so I directed my eyes at the 'Sandwiches' portion of the menu only to find 5 items listed there. The 5 items were 3 different types of burgers, a lobster roll and a hot dog. I got a little flustered because not only was the item I was looking for not there but I didn't consider any of those items to be what I would call a sandwich.

According to the definition a sandwich requires 2 pieces of bread. This alone should disqualify hot dogs from being considered a sandwich. By definition a burger is more of a sandwich than a hot dog is although I don't consider either one to be.

Those who claim a hot dog is in fact a sandwich say just because a hot dog roll has a thin hinge of bread connecting the two larger pieces, the hot dog is still 'sandwiched' between two pieces of bread.

I don't think a hot dog is a sandwich, it is a hot dog, and I don't think it is a real hot dog unless it's red! (Am I right?!)

So what do you think? Is a hot dog a sandwich? Leave your vote on our poll below!
