Visiting a Maine island can be a great way to get away from it all and spend some time in a slower-paced, relaxing environment.

If you want to get as far away as possible, there is one island trip that may be perfect for you, because it's the furthest away.

Have you heard of Matinicus Island?

Matinicus Island in Penobscot Bay

Matinicus Isle is located far out in Penobscot Bay, about 22 miles from Rockland.

IslandInstitute.org says Matinicus Isle is the most remote year-round island in Maine.

The ferry ride to the island is a long one, as the Maine State Ferry Service says the two-hour trip to Matinicus is their longest route.

Visitors can access the island by taking the Charles Norman Shay out of Rockland.

What Is on Matinicus Island in Maine?

Fewer than 100 people live on the island year-round and Matinicus isn't considered a major tourist destination, making it a perfect area for those looking for something quiet and out of the way.

It features the Steamboat Wharf ferry landing, two sandy beaches, a small library operated by volunteers, a post office, a power station, and a church that was built in 1906.

It also has a one-room schoolhouse for students in grades K-8. High school students go to school on the mainland.

The surrounding waters are productive fishing waters, and the island has a long history of fishing, especially lobstering.

Some who live on the island rely on lobstering to make a living, and it's a vital part of the island's economy.

In addition to the tranquility, the other main draw when it comes to Matinicus is the landscape, and how could it not be?

You're surrounded by ocean views and have a beautiful shoreline that consists of rocky sections and sandy beaches.

Beauty is all around you.

Other Maine islands may be easier to get to or may have more commercial activities and larger tourism operations, but those are exactly the reasons why someone may want to skip them and go to Matinicus instead.

Remember, the whole point wasn't just about getting away. It was about getting as far away as possible.
