Two young women from Waldo and Penobscot Counties recently took the top spot at the Miss Maine USA and Miss Teen Maine USA Pageant held in Portland.

According to the Miss Maine USA website, The Miss Maine Competition is open to any Maine resident or full-time student who was born in the US, and has never been married nor given birth to a child.

16-year-old Madisson Higgins, a sophomore at John Bapst Memorial High School was crowned Miss Teen USA on March 20th at the Sheraton Sable Oaks Hotel in South Portland.

Along with a love for animals, Higgins has set her sights on some high goals after she graduates in 2024.

"Madisson has aspirations of one day becoming a nurse anesthetist, so she too can help others in time of need. Madisson is also inspired by her mother who is a CPA and has encouraged Madisson to follow her dreams in anesthesiology, a predominantly male field. She looks forward to the Miss USA pageant and hopes to bring the title of Miss Teen USA back to the State of Maine."

The new Miss Maine USA, Elizabeth Kervin, is originally from Winterport and currently attending Husson University. While working on her degree in Biochemistry, Kervin has ambitious goals for what she wants to do after school.

"As a Dean’s List student in one of the most rigorous programs Husson has to offer, Elizabeth started out as the only female in her program. With this degree, she plans to go to medical school in pursuit of becoming a trauma surgeon. Elizabeth has been an active volunteer at the local Hampden VFW, and will use her title to continue her advocacy work and volunteering to help the veterans of Maine and for those who selflessly fight for our freedom."

Best of luck to both Higgins and Kervin as they advance, and will represent Maine in the Miss Teen USA and Miss USA Pageants later this year.
