With the political side of this conversation behind us, the real business at hand for folks around Skowhegan is what their new mascot will be. A while back, school officials retired the 'Indians' mascot, out of respect to Native Americans around the state.

Naturally, it caused a firestorm of controversy, that probably died down for a while. And hopefully, it won't pick back up again now that it's time to choose a new mascot. But so far, they've received some 1600 submissions for what the new mascot should be, and shaved that list down to 350, according to WGME - TV13.

The next step will be to gather feedback from kids in 6th - 12th grade to see what their choice might be. But not until the Support Services Committee and the Education Policy and Programming Committee revise the list much further, down to five. Students will then vote on the top 5.

Then those two committees will review the feedback, and give their opinion to the school board, who will then make the final vote for what the mascot will be. It may seem like a bit of a tedious process, but it's obviously a hot-button for folks around town, so they want to get it right.

When a new mascot is finally chosen, we'll be sure to follow up and let you guys know what the results are.
