
Skowhegan, Maine Police Fatally Shoot a New York Man
The Maine Attorney General's Office is investigating a fatal police-involved shooting in Skowhegan.
New York Man Dies After Being Shot by the Police in Skowhegan, Maine
Kenneth 'Carlos' Ortega, 30, of New York, was shot during an allegedly armed incident Saturday evening in Skowhegan.
He would later die from his injuries while being treated at Redington-Fairview Hospital.
Skowhegan, Maine Police-Involved Shooting of New York Man
The incident began when Skowhegan Police Officers were called to a home on Water Street for a report of suspicious activity. The caller told authorities that the residents of the home had died earlier that day.

Police officers responded and found a man and a woman walking away from the residence.

According to the Kennebec Journal, they ordered the pair to stop, but the man allegedly fired a gun in the air. He then, allegedly, pointed the firearm towards the officers, prompting Officer Benaiah Wihoite to fire back.
Ortega was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
As is standard procedure in any police-involved shooting in Maine, Officer Wilhoite has been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation by the Maine Attorney General's Office.
